If your country isn't here, call your local emergency number, go to the nearest emergency department, or tell your doctor or someone you trust how you're feeling. We'll keep adding countries.

What happens when you call or text

Someone answers. It's usually a trained listener, and on many lines a volunteer. At busy times you may hear a recording or wait a few minutes first.

They'll ask how you're doing, and often whether you're safe right now. Then they listen. You choose how much to say, and you can stop whenever you like.

Texting works the same way, with a person typing back to you.

Will they send the police?

Most calls never involve emergency services. On the US 988 network, they were sent on about 2 calls in every 100, and some of those were at the caller's own request. That's an average for the whole network, and local centers can differ. A counselor is meant to do this only as a last resort, when someone is in immediate danger and can't or won't take steps to stay safe, or has already started to hurt themselves. Most other countries publish no figures at all, so we can't tell you how often it happens there. You're free to ask the line about its rules before you share anything.

Before you call

You don't need the right words. You can start with something as simple as "I'm not okay and I don't know what to do," and that is enough. The person who answers is there to listen, and they don't expect you to explain everything at once.

Most lines don't ask for your name. If you'd rather not talk out loud, many places also offer chat or text. We list those too, with their hours when we could confirm them. Chat can have a wait, so if it does, a call may be quicker.

If a line is busy, that doesn't mean you're being turned away. Try another one from the list, or try the same one again in a few minutes.

What stays private

Many lines don't show your number to the person who answers, and some record calls for training. If the person answering believes your life is in immediate danger, many lines can contact emergency services. That happens in a small share of calls, and most lines try other ways to help first. If you're worried about it, you can ask at the start: "What happens with what I tell you?"

If you can't speak

You can still reach help. Look for text or chat on your country's card. If you're deaf, hard of hearing or can't speak on the phone, many countries have a relay or sign language video service. In the United States, you can dial 711 and then 988. In the United Kingdom, you can register in advance to text 999 by sending the word register to 999. If you call an emergency number and can't speak, stay on the line and listen to the operator.

Staying safe right now

If you're thinking about ending your life, put some distance between you and anything you could use to hurt yourself. Another room is enough, or you can ask someone to hold on to it for a while. If you can, be with another person, or ask someone to stay with you while you call. You don't have to explain why.

If you're worried about someone else

If someone you know might be in danger right now, call the emergency number for the country they're in. If it isn't an emergency, you can still call one of the crisis lines yourself. You don't have to be the one in crisis to call, and the person who answers can help you think about what to say.

A few things help:

  • Ask them directly whether they're thinking about suicide. Asking doesn't put the idea in their head, and it can be a relief to be asked.
  • Listen. You don't have to fix anything or find the perfect words.
  • If you can, help them put some distance between themselves and anything they could use to hurt themselves.
  • Help them reach a line on their country's card, or sit with them while they call.
  • If they tell you about a plan, don't promise to keep it secret. Getting them help matters more.
  • Check in again in a day or two, and look after yourself too.
If someone checks your phone

If someone else checks your phone or computer, they may be able to see that you visited this page or called one of these numbers. A private or incognito window doesn't save this page to your history, and you can delete a single call from your call list afterward. In some places a call can still show on an itemized bill, so if that worries you, a text or chat line may be safer, or a phone that isn't shared. After the call

It's normal to feel tired, lighter, or no different at all. If the worst has passed, a few things can help. Tell one person you trust what happened. Make an appointment with a doctor or a therapist if you can. Write down what helped, so you have it next time. If the feelings come back strong, call again. Calling again is always okay.

How we chose these lines

We list a line when we could trace it to the organization that runs it or to an official source. Where only a news report or a directory backs a line, its card says so. When we can't trace one, we say so and leave the number out, because a short list that is right helps you more than a long one that might not be.

Numbers and hours can change, so if a call doesn't connect, try the next line on the card or the emergency number. The operator's own site is always the newest source.

If you're traveling, choose the country you're in right now, not your home country. The numbers on this page are written the way you dial them inside that country, and short numbers like 116 123 or 988 only work there.
